Lowbrow, or Pop Surrealism, is an underground visual art movement that arose in the Los Angeles, California area in the late 1960s. The movement's cultural roots were in underground comix, punk music, tiki culture, graffiti, and hot-rod cultures. It can be defined as character art, with a sense of humour. The purpose of the lowbrow movement was to take an unorthodox approach to art and completely defy its "rules". This resulted in pushback from significant individuals and organisations the art industry.
Justin "Boyishmind" Schwartz's art is influenced/inspired by the Lowbrow movement, growing up immersed in art, skate and surf culture on the East Coast of Africa. He's developed his unique, quirky characters over years selling original artwork pieces to a global fanbase.
